Liz Phair just doesn’t get it, does she? Pretty convinced she hasn’t listened to the album. What’s assertive and inspiring about a singer who begs and pleads to be loved, wanted and adored by a man who buys her diamonds? Nothing.
If anything, we’ve already established that LDR is the male ideal of “the pop singer.” She sings sexy, teasing songs to attract the male gaze; there’s nothing powerfully feminist about her.
I mean, if LDR’s idea of “feminism” is wholly devoting herself to the physical/emotional pleasure of men, then so be it. Still doesn’t mean that sentiment should be interpreted as an “inspiring message,” as Phair suggests here.

I would argue that LDR at least acknowledges that this is a shitty way to live, but also refuses to ask for something better, so…yeah, I still mainly agree with you. She’s the siren who sings about tragedy as it’s happening but remains powerless to do anything about it. A siren that sounds alternately like a poor man’s Fiona Apple and a poor man’s Stevie Nicks.
