Untitled: rambly
kind of rambly but
the main “message”/idea i was trying to convey in adrien brody was a criticism of the idea about women having power over men with their sexuality/beauty. not just men who believe this, but showing how women who internalize this myth are…
Feeling ashamed for a lot of people that this post even had to be written.
EDIT: The more I think about it, the more I realize Adrien Brody carries a didactic, feminist message (but without being too heavy handed about it). Maybe not as “sex positive” as a lot of the stuff I read, but necessary. I tend to shy away from stuff that shows how sex can be degrading to women because I’m so revolted by the Dworkinite, all hetero sex is rape, anti-erotica, false consciousness accusing, condescending, I know what’s best for you stuff, but there’s certainly a dark side to sex and objectification that still needs to be reckoned with, and I’m impressed with anyone who can do that without falling down the aforementioned k-hole. I’m pretty sure Calloway isn’t against all sexy stuff, just shitty sexy stuff, and this story is a ridiculously good example of “shitty sexy stuff.” I don’t think anyone could’ve invented a better pair of characters to play out this parable. I just hope she stops making herself a martyr to these ideas as she gets older, because that could get taxing.
Oh, and another thing! Fuck anyone who thinks “Marie Calloway” and the author’s real self (whoever she is) are obviously the same person.
